Rasquachismo is inherently tied to location, but due to displacement caused by commercialization, in Boyle Heights, Rasquache identity is disappearing. La Vida Rasquache aims to counterbalance the changing identity of Boyle Heights through community engagement. by using local material studies, this project aspires to explore the needs of this multi-generational neighborhood. The proposal will revive a vacant auto body shop into a resource center that provides individuals with knowledge, materials, and support to make renovation accessible.
La Vida Rasquache
Rasquachismo is a Chicano way of life. It is an anecdote describing the sensibility of making do with what’s available. Boyle heights is one of the neighborhoods that make up east Los Angeles, the largest Hispanic community in the united states. Rasquachismo is inherently tied to location, but due to displacement caused by commercialization, in Boyle Heights, Rasquache identity is disappearing. La Vida Rasquache aims to counterbalance the changing identity of Boyle Heights through community engagement. by using local material studies, this project aspires to explore the needs of this multi-generational neighborhood.
The proposal will revive a vacant auto body shop into a resource center that provides individuals with knowledge, materials, and support to make renovation accessible. My project includes physical objects made from discarded materials such as pots, tires, and plastic bags. These objects are designed into the space to make it feel welcome.
